Central Concrete Introduces CarbonCure in the San Francisco Bay Area

Following an extensive year-long testing procedure at the U.S. Concrete National Research Laboratory in San Jose, Central Concrete committed to a first phase roll-out which includes installing the CarbonCure Technology in its seven West Bay plants. This roll-out enables Central Concrete to further reduce the carbon footprint of its concrete mixes, and further solidify the concrete producer’s reputation as a clear leader in concrete sustainability.

The San Francisco Bay region is known for its deeply-rooted commitment to the environment. The local design and construction community has particularly high demands for sustainability. David Shook, Structural Engineer at Skidmore Owings Merrill (SOM) remarked, “SOM is committed to sustainable design. The CarbonCure Technology is an important step in mitigating harmful carbon emissions and we look forward to its use in The Bay.”

Shook’s sentiments were echoed by Susan McComb, Principal at BAR Architects, “We are continuously striving to push the boundaries of sustainability at BAR Architects. Concrete is an integral component on all of our designs and we are so excited to hear that Central Concrete has adopted the innovative CarbonCure Technology locally.”

The CarbonCure Technology introduces recycled CO2 into concrete during its production in order to help concrete producers realize manufacturing efficiencies and reduce their carbon footprint, without impacting the concrete’s properties or quality. The expanded partnership with CarbonCure builds on Central Concrete’s legacy of investing in strategies to mitigate the environmental impact of the built environment.

“Central Concrete has always been a leader in the ready-mixed concrete industry in setting the standard for the development of low-carbon concrete that exceeds the performance of traditional concrete,” said Herb Burton, vice president and general manager, U.S. Concrete West Region. “By adopting the CarbonCure Technology, Central Concrete is again exhibiting its leadership and commitment to reducing the overall carbon footprint without sacrificing performance.” - Herb Burton, Vice President & General Manager, U.S. Concrete West Region

In September, CarbonCure and Central Concrete will be co-promoting at the Carbon Smart Building Day, a conference hosted in San Francisco for building professionals striving to achieve a Net Zero Carbon built environment. The conference is affiliated with the Global Climate Action Summit co-chaired by California Governor Jerry Brown. The summit is intended to act as a launch pad for deeper worldwide commitment to sustainability initiatives. During the summit, CarbonCure’s Jennifer Wagner will be recognized as one of 22 Climate Trailblazers from around the world for her work leading CarbonCure’s sustainability efforts.
