Pangaea portfolio company Kanvas Biosciences has moved its laboratory operations into 12,000 square feet on the 10th floor of H-1, the flagship research building at The HELIX in downtown New Brunswick, New Jersey. CEO and co-founder Matthew Cheng calls it a defining moment for the company.
Kanvas develops live biotherapeutic products: defined communities of bacteria designed to act on the gut microbiome and help the immune system fight disease. Its spatial biology work uses imaging technology developed at Cornell University to map where microbes sit in the gut and how they interact with each other and with human cells. The team uses those maps to design treatments.
The lead candidate, KAN-001, targets non-small cell lung cancer patients who need immune checkpoint inhibitors, and the company says it is preparing to begin recruitment this year. KAN-004 is recruiting for a Phase 1 trial in colitis caused by checkpoint inhibitor treatment. KAN-007, a fully synthetic microbiome replacement product for environmental enteric dysfunction, received support from the Gates Foundation. All three are investigational and not approved by the FDA.
