State of New Jersey Professor, Department of Ceramics and Materials Engineering, Rutgers University
Bernard Kear is the State of New Jersey Professor in the Department of Ceramic and Materials Engineering and Director of the Centre of Nanomaterials Research at Rutgers University in New Jersey. Prior to his academic appointment, Professor Kear held the positions of Scientific Advisor at the Materials Sciences Laboratory of Exxon Research and Engineering and Senior Staff Scientist at United Technologies Research Centre in Connecticut.
Bernard Kear has a broad and diverse background in advanced materials and processing technologies. His work has covered areas that include intermetallic compounds, superalloys, rapid solidification, surface modification and chemical synthesis of nanophase materials. He sits on several advisory boards, including the Department of Materials Engineering at Drexel University, the Materials Processing Centre at MIT, and the NBS Board of Assessment. He is also affiliated with many professional societies and chaired the Board of Governors of Acta Metallurgica in 1987 and the National Materials Advisory Board in 1986. Bernard Kear has also been involved in spinning out companies based on his leading edge technology research at Rutgers University.
Professor Kear is listed in Who's Who in America and in Engineering, has received numerous awards and was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1979. He has published widely with more than 250 articles and holds 40 US patents. He is the co-editor of the journal of "Nanostructured Materials" published by Pergamon Press.
Bernie obtained his D.Sc degree in Materials Science in 1970, the Ph.D. degree in 1957 and his B.Sc. degree in 1954 from the University of the University of Birmingham, England.
